Description
CancerCare 8th Cross Bay Challenge
Your Guide 2 Events in the Lake District
The CancerCare 8th Cross Bay Challenge in Morecambe Bay offers a choice of a half-marathon race or a family-friendly six mile walk. Set against the breathtaking scenery of Morecambe Bay and the South Lakes, the Cross Bay Challenge offers something for everyone.
The Half Marathon race is truly one of a kind. It's the only race in the world to cross a tidal bay and you'll run through the sea, across sand and county borders, starting in Lancashire across both coach routes across the bay ending in Cumbria at Canal Foot Ulverston. The walkers venture out into the bay from what is known locally as the mile road at Flookburgh across the Leven coach route calling at Chapel Island before arriving at the finish line in Ulverston in time to cheer on the runners.
The Cross Bay Challenge 2010 was selected by UK Athletics as the UK's favourite half marathon of the year and attracted record numbers of both runners and walkers. Not only was it the biggest Cross Bay Challenge ever but also one of the largest events ever to take place on the Morecambe Bay sands
. The 2011 event was voted 4th by Runners World Readers in the top trail races category.
Due to the success of the event and Morecambe Bay channel changes, the 2012 Cross Bay Challenge has different venues and timings than in previous years. For the first time this event is now being staged across the entire bay and GlaxoSmithKline at Ulverston have kindly agreed to allow use of their facilities, including vast car parking areas, showers, toilets and refreshments for participants.
The 2012 Cross Bay Challenge
half marathon
run will now start from Red Bank, Bolton-le-Sands at 1:45pm and continue along the banks of the Keer channel to one mile south of Silverdale. Then across to two miles south of Humphrey Head around Cowpren Point to Chapel Island and into Ulverston at Canal Foot, taking in both rights of way across the bay.
The walk will be from Cark Airfield starting at 11:30am to Canal Foot, Ulverston via Chapel Island. Buses will depart GlaxoSmithKline, Ulverston at 10:30am for the start of the walk and from 11:30am for the start of the half marathon run.
