Description Simon Jenkins, in his recent book 'England's Thousand Best Churches' (Penguin), says that "Cartmel is the most beautiful church in the north-west". It is also one of the oldest, dating back to 1189. Carmel Priory is the priory church of St.Mary and St.Michael. The Parish of Cartmel is part of the Windermere Deanery in the Diocese of Carlisle. It is one of the six parishes which make up the Cartmel Peninsula Team Ministry. The other parishes are Allithwaite, Field Broughton, Flookburgh, Grange-over-Sands and Lindale. Vicar of Cartmel: Rev.
