Description
Edward Wilson: Artist of the Antarctic Display at Abbot Hall
Your Guide 2 Events in Kendal
Abbot Hall Art Gallery
in Kendal
are hosting a display of eight original Edward Wilson Antarctic watercolours and drawings.
Edward Wilson
(1872-1912)
was a physician, naturalist, explorer and artist who accompanied Captain Scott to Antarctica on both The Discovery
(1901-4)
and Terra Nova
(1910-13)
expeditions. It is 100 years since Scott, Wilson, Henry Robertson ('Birdie') Bowers, Edgar Evans and Captain Lawrence Oates reached the South Pole only to find that they had been beaten to their goal by the Norwegian Roald Amundsen. All five men died on their return, the last three – Wilson, Scott and Bowers – perishing together just 11 miles from the next depot of supplies.
This display of all eight of Abbot Hall's original Edward Wilson Antarctic watercolours and drawings is a modest tribute to a man described by Scott as
'the finest character I ever met'
. The main aim is not to tell the gripping story of the expeditions but to focus on the pictures themselves and their ability to reconcile the seemingly contradictory roles of Wilson as creative artist and objective scientist; a great admirer of John Ruskin and JMW Turner, Wilson sought to convey not just the topographical details of the uncharted terrain that he encountered, but also the wonder, hardship and sublime impressions he experienced in exploring hitherto unseen and undocumented, polar landscapes.
Edward Wilson: Artist of the Antarctic
takes place from Thursday Jan. 12th to Saturday April 21st 2012
Turner and his Contemporaries
is also on show at Abbot Hall Art Gallery during this period

The 'Discovery' and 'Terra Nova' Expeditions Through the Art of Edward A. Wilson
A Lecture by Christopher Wilson at Abbot Hall Art Gallery in Kendal
On
Thursday March
22nd 2012
at
6.30pm
there will be a lecture at Abbot Hall in connection with the Edward Wilson: Artist of the Antarctic exhibition. Christopher J. Wilson Dip Eco (Cork), FZS, is the great-nephew of Dr. Edward A. Wilson. He is an accomplished photographer having contributed to numerous wildlife books and his own publications include Edward Wilson's Nature Notebooks (2004) and Edward Wilson's Antarctic Notebooks (2011). This lecture explores his unveiling of the Antarctic continent through remarkable drawings and watercolours that provide a real taste of the heroic age of Antarctic exploration.
