Description   From Auschwitz to Ambleside Exhibition  Your Guide 2 Events in Bowness & Windermere   'From Auschwitz to Ambleside' is an exhibition at Windermere Library which commemorates the arrival of 300 Jewish child Holocaust survivors in Ambleside 65 years ago. The 'lost' village of Calgarth Estate became the first UK home for the young refugees from eastern Europe and their story was recently featured in the BBC documentary The Orphans Who Survived The Concentration Camps. There is an exhibition of photographs and background information on the refugees arrival, including details of the Short Brothers "Flying Boat" factory at White Cross Bay and the Calgarth Estate. In April 2011 the remarkable exhibition was expanded to include artwork, literature, film, archive and educational resources. Windermere Library is open Monday to Friday (not Wednesday): 9:30am - 5pm & Saturdays 10am - 1pm.
