ravenglass_eskdale03.jpgA visit to the Lakes is not complete without experiencing Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway! It's Lakeland’s longest, oldest, and most scenic steam railway, which connects the Lake District's coast to its highest mountain. The seven mile journey from the delightful coastal village of Ravenglass, passes through two glorious valleys as your steam train travels to the foot of the Scafell range.

Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway is a Quality Assured Visitor Attraction. Each of their locos travels around 6,000 miles per year hauling trains consisting of 'breath of fresh air' open carriages, practical open-sided
carriages and cosy, covered saloons. They operate more trains on a longer line than any other Lake District heritage railway.

All of the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway is in the Lake District National Park, beyond life's commercialism and hustle-bustle and surrounded by spectacular beauty! Keep an out out for Red Squirrels, Herdwicks and Buzzards en route as you travel on Lakeland’s most scenic railway.

Cycling and Walking

ravenglass_eskdale05.jpgEskdale and its surroundings are ideal walking territory for ramblers and strollers alike. Travel by steam and walking in the most delightful of surroundings make an ideal combination as legendary fell-walker Alfred Wainwright described in his booklet Walks from Ratty. More details of walking around Eskdale are here.

An increasing number of cyclists are making use of the train to join the Eskdale TRail or exploring three specifically devised routes in the Eskdale valley. Each train has one carriage designed to carry cycles, although pre-booking with at least 24-hours notice is essential to guarantee a space for your bike. Phone 01229 717171 and ask to speak to Ravenglass Ticket Office. Cycle route cards are available from The Scafell Gift Shop at Dalegarth Visitor Centre. More details are here.
