*** Latest News: The Windermere Air Festival 2012 Cancelled ***

windermere_air_festival_10aleft.jpg The Windermere Air Festival 2011 - formerly known as the Windermere Airshow - will be a spectacular event with a total of 16 flying displays over two afternoons*. Plus exciting showground displays to keep every child and adult enthralled!

Over 40,000 people attended the tenth anniversary Air Show event last year, despite the cancellation through bad weather of the first day's programme of events.

The flying programme varies each day with non-stop ground entertainment for all the family on the Air Base. Ground attractions will include a military village and battle re-enactments by Earl of Montagu's Regiment of Foote. Moky Fit will show you how to create some fun dance routines, the local Ju-Jitsu group will be demonstrating their martial moves and running some 'have a go' sessions and Kendal Majorettes will show their marching and cheerleading capabilities. The YMCA will be bringing a climbing wall, there will be Kids Go-Karts and face painters and jugglers will make their way round the Air Base.

windermere_air_festival_11.jpgThe organisers are promising more fun than ever before and the name of the event has been changed from Windermere Air Show to the Windermere Air Festival to reflect the expanded activities and entertainment.

Entry to the Air Base on The Lakeside is just £5 for adults, £2.50 for children between 5-15 years and free for 4 years and under.  The printed programme will not be available until closer to the event, with copies available to purchase on the day. Its price has been reduced from £10 to £5, so more people will be able to learn about the planes, pilots and the Air Base activities on the ground.

The 2011 Windermere Air Festival was a great success with some 40,000 people descending on Bowness-on-Windermere to enjoy a weekend of entertainment and air displays. It is estimated that the event generated millions of pounds for the local economy. £10,650 was raised for local and military charities with 32 different charities represented on site.

The official charity of the festival was The Rotary Club of Windermere who took away £6,000 from the weekend, all of which will go towards worthy causes including the Langdale and Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team and local youth projects. The Windermere Air Festival asked the Rotary to provide volunteers for the weekend and the charity was then paid for their man hours. They also received a large proportion of the proceeds from the festival Car Park on top of running the children's games on the Air Base and the usual bucket shaking.

Previous News and Programme:

The mighty Avro Vulcan XH558 is making a welcome return to Windermere for the Air Festival. The magnificent aircraft last wowed visitors back in 2009 and has been a major talking point ever since. The Vulcan will be performing a full nine minute display over the stunning backdrop of Lake Windermere on Saturday 23rd July.

The full air display line up will give visitors and viewers a spectacular presentation of pure grace and raw energy, with pilots flipping, swooping and dancing their ways around the skies.

The Air Festival kicks off on Saturday with an action-packed flying programme welcoming back the breathtaking acrobatics of the Breitling Wing Walkers. They'll perform a sequence of manoeuvres and handstands whilst strapped to the top wings of the team's beautiful Boeing Stearman biplanes.

Visitor will also be awed by the RedHawks' air show act with a slow, gentle and graceful four-minute, three-dimensional aerial ballet performed to soothing music by a pair of 42-years-old, wooden, high-efficiency aeroplanes, designed by French musician, artist, ceramicist and sculptor Réné Fournier.

One of Saturday’s highlights will be the RAF Falcons parachute display team. Now in their 50th anniversary year, the Falcons are sure to perform a unique, colourful and courageous aerial display as they parachute down onto the Air Base.

The Battle of Britain Memorial Flights will be gracing the Windermere Air Festival with their presence on both days with special flights from the Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster Bomber. The RV8tors will be flying their remarkably fast Vans RV-8's with powerful smoke systems, performing an exciting and memorable display. Combining close formation aerobatics with speeds up to 230 mph, the display makes large manoeuvres that fill the sky and leave large smoke trails.

The Air Festival is bringing to the show both the RAF Tucano and the RAF Hawk. Both spectacular in their own right the Hawk display team will demonstrate the professional excellence of the RAF while the Tucano display consists of 21 manoeuvres including an offset barrel roll, stall turn, oblique loop and reverse wingover.

windermere_air_festival_red_arrows.jpgOn Sunday the Twister Duo will create a display of formation barrel loops, rolls and gravity defying zoom climbs. The highlight of the weekend is set to be the Red Arrows, the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team. Having missed last year's Air Show, the Red Arrows are returning to Windermere and will headlining on Sunday 24th.

The RAF Red Arrows are the world’s best formation team and have been wowing audiences for over forty-five years with over 4,000 displays held in an amazing fifty-two countries.

Today the Red Arrows are renowned throughout the world, acting as ambassadors for Great Britain when displaying overseas. They also support UK industry by demonstrating the capabilities of British equipment and expertise.

The Red Arrows' reputation is built on commitment and professionalism, combined with their RAF skills, training and equipment. Many of the Red Arrows' pilots and support staff have recently returned from
Iraq and Afghanistan.
