Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway
A visit to the Lakes is not complete without experiencing Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway! Since 1875, the Railway has connected the mines of the Eskdale valley with the former strategic Roman port of Ravenglass. Originally built to a 3ft gauge, it was re-gauged in 1915 by famous model maker Bassett-Lowke. La'al Ratty, its local nickname, means “narrow way” in olde Cumbrian dialect.
Today, the Railway is an award winning heritage visitor attraction and Lake District icon, living up to its "must do" reputation for all ages. The seven mile, 40 minute journey from coast to mountain traverses the nature reserves of the Ravenglass estuary before ascending through ancient woodlands towards the foothills of England’s highest Mountains, the Scafell range. There are excellent facilities at both ends of the line, a choice of open and closed cosy carriages with steam and diesel engines in regular service. A great all weather day out.
Cycling and Walking in Eskdale and District
Eskdale and its surroundings are ideal walking territory for ramblers and strollers alike. Travel by steam and walking in the most delightful of surroundings make an ideal combination as legendary fell-walker Alfred Wainwright described in his booklet 'Walks from Ratty'.
An increasing number of cyclists are making use of the train to join the Eskdale TRail or exploring three specifically devised routes in the Eskdale valley. Each train has one carriage designed to carry cycles, although pre-booking with at least 24-hours notice is essential to guarantee a space for your bike. Phone 01229 717171 and ask to speak to Ravenglass Ticket Office. Cycle route cards are available from The Scafell Gift Shop at Dalegarth Visitor Centre.
