The Royalty Cinema Bowness
The Royalty Cinema in Bowness-on-Windermere has three screens with digital projection and Dolby Stereo sound offering the latest releases, and also selected screenings of less commercial films. The Royalty is also known for its 1927 Wurlitzer organ, the only one of its kind in a working cinema in Europe. A five year programme of restoration of the Wurlitzer has recently been completed by a team of volunteers from The Furness Theatre Organ Project.
The organ is a 2 manual instrument of 7 ranks which was originally installed in a theatre in Cleveland, Ohio before arriving in England in 1934, where it was installed in the Rex Cinema in East London. The Wurlitzer remained there until the early 1970s when it was put into storage. A series of two hour lunchtime concerts takes place each year.
