Your Guide 2 The Lake District Your Guide 2 Bowness-on-Windermere & Windermere Bowness-on-Windermere is at the heart of the Lake District National Park It's easy to get confused between Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake and the two towns which bear its name and are in close proximity to one another, having flourished into popular tourist destinations. Bowness-on-Windermere is often referred to simply as 'Bowness', to distinguish it from the neighbouring town of Windermere which is over a mile from the lake itself. There's plenty of heritage in Bowness with the town's ancient parish church of St. Martin built in 1483 and the former rectory is said to have been built in 1415. If you’re familiar with Arthur Ransome's classic novel Swallows and Amazons, you’ll recognise Bowness-on-Windermere as the Lake District town of 'Rio'.
