On Friday 18th September 2015, as part of the BFI Love Season, Grizedale Forest turns into a mythical site for a cinematic tale of whimsical love, adventure and mischief with a screening of The Singing Ringing Tree, directed by Francesco Stefani (U) 1957 / 74mins.

The Singing, Ringing Tree is an East German fairytale made in 1957, which features a prince that turns into a bear, a princess with green hair and a territorial evil dwarf – this romance is told with terrifying, enchanting and psychedelic visual effect. Here the theatricality of the sets, including painted stars, strangely enhance the film's haunting air of enchantment that invites comparison with David Lynch, Jean Cocteau, and the stranger works of Michael Powell.

BFI Love rekindles audience passions for film and television’s most enduring love stories, celebrating big screen romance, our most cherished romantic comedies, and the darkest tales of obsession and betrayal. Truly an affair to remember, the season runs from October to December 2015 at BFI Southbank, on BFI Player, and in cinemas across the UK. BFI: Love at the AND Festival also features a screening of Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom on Saturday 19th September 2015.
