Helm PoniesCome and meet the ponies that look after the land at The Helm, the large hill next to Oxenholme station in Kendal. You can learn about this local and rare breed of pony from the landscape conservation charity Friends of the Lake District, the ponies role in conservation grazing and the fun riding and driving of them.

The ponies remove the rank grass growth helping keep an open sward for wild flowers to flourish in. Their large hooves help to break up the ground, so seeds from plants have bare ground to germinate in, which helps to increase plant diversity. Fell ponies are one of Britain's hardiest native pony breeds and are native to the north of England. The ponies are mostly found in Cumbria, in the old counties of Cumberland and Westmorland, where probably they have roamed since pre-historic times. They graze all year round and are a native rare breed considered to be 'at risk'.

There will be children's activities and tea and cake. Follow the signs to the Friends of the Lake District National Park tent near the tarn from the Station Inn end of the Helm. This is a free event. Just turn up!
