A free 'behind the scenes' tour of Steam Yacht Gondola owned and operated by the National Trust as part of the annual series of Heritage Open Days. Visitors will be able to view archive material about the history of the yacht seldom seen and find out more about the story of the rescue and the rebuild.

This is an opportunity to view the luxurious interior saloons of this unique steamboat, which last year won Cumbria Tourism's Visitor Attraction of the Year 2016. Steam Yacht Gondola will be moored at Coniston Pier early evening with a chance to step onboard and chat to the crew, including the engineers who maintain the boat and the helmsmen who sail her. The engine will be on view and the fire box will be well stoked. A close up view can also be taken of 'Sid' the Sea Serpent, who has been re-carved locally from fine English oak and gilded in gold as well as the new upholstery undertaken on the cushions in the forward saloon. There will also be an activity sheet for children to complete in return for a 'pirates' certificate to be presented on the evening.
