Heritage Open Days celebrate England's fantastic architecture and culture by offering free access to properties that normally charge for admission or are closed to the public. Every year on four days in September, buildings of every age, style and function in the Lake District and Cumbria throw open their doors, ranging from castles to factories, town halls to tithe barns, parish churches and Buddhist temples. It is a once-a-year chance to discover hidden architectural treasures and enjoy a wide range of tours, events and activities which bring to life local history and culture. This year there are more than 70 venues within Cumbria hosting heritage open days which take place between Thursday 7th to Sunday 10th September 2017. Allan BankAllan Bank -  Grasmere, Cumbria, LA22 9QB - Saturday 9th September from 10am to 5pm (last entry 4:30); The house was first tenanted by William Wordsworth and his circle of Lake Poets and later bequeathed to the Nation by National Trust Co-founder Canon Rawnsley. Rescued from a serious fire in 2011, the Allan Bank first opened to visitors in 2012 and is presented largely unfurnished and undecorated. Explore the grounds at Allan Bank: Follow the Billie the Buzzard garden trail. Venture further and explore woodland paths, which wind through a mysterious tunnel and beyond to picturesque viewing points. More...

Merz BarnKurt Schwitter's Merz Barn - Cylinders, Elterwater, Ambleside, LA22 9JB - Thursday 7th, Friday 8th, Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th September from 10am to 5pm - The Elterwater Merz Barn is a small stone building that was originally used for storing gunpowder made in the Elterwater Gunpowder Works opposite (now the Langdale Hotel). During the late 1940s it served as the studio of emigre German artist Kurt Schwitters who created an amazing work of art there, which in 1965 was removed to the Hatton Art Gallery in Newcastle for safe-keeping. The Merz Barn is situated in the beautiful Cylinders estate, and is visited by artists, art lovers, and academics seeking to appreciate the inspiration for Schwitters' internationally famous work. There will be special guided tours and talks for visitors, who will also be able to explore the site at their leisure. Steam Yacht GondolaSteam Yacht Gondola Behind the Scenes - Coniston Pier, Lake Road, Coniston, LA21 8AN - Friday 8th September - 5pm to 6:30pm - This is a superb opportunity for visitors and locals alike to view archive material about the history of the yacht seldom seen and find out more about the story of the rescue and the rebuild. Visitors can view the luxurious interior saloons of this unique steamboat, which last year won Cumbria Tourism's Visitor Attraction of the Year 2016. More...

The Clergy Daughters' School - 2 Bronte Cottages, Cowan Bridge, Kirkby Lonsdale, LA6 2HS - Sunday 10th September - 11am to 5pm - Visit the school that was established in 1824 by Rev. W. Carus Wilson and attended by Charlotte and Emily Bronte between 1824 - 25. Step inside the very place that inspired Charlotte Bronte's 'Lowood' in Jane Eyre.

Wray CastleWray Castle - Low Wray, Ambleside, LA22 0JA -  Sunday 10th September from 10am to 4pm - Join a tour to learn about the recent investigations into the castle's history and the Dawsons. The archaeology demonstration will unearth a newly found structure on the Pleasure Lawn. Plus there will be tours of the impressive Double Boathouse on the lakeshore, which isn’t usually open to the public. Booking required. More...
