Heritage Open Days celebrate England's fantastic architecture and culture by offering free access to properties that normally charge for admission or are closed to the public. Every year on four days in September, buildings of every age, style and function in the Lake District and Cumbria throw open their doors, ranging from castles to factories, town halls to tithe barns, parish churches and Buddhist temples. It is a once-a-year chance to discover hidden architectural treasures and enjoy a wide range of tours, events and activities which bring to life local history and culture. This year there are more than 70 venues within Cumbria hosting heritage open days which take place between Thursday 8th to Sunday 11th September 2016: For a complete list of venues open to the public see here. Allan BankAllan Bank -  Grasmere, Cumbria, LA22 9QB - Saturday 10th September from 10am to 5pm (last entry 4:30); The house was first tenanted by William Wordsworth and his circle of Lake Poets and later bequeathed to the Nation by National Trust Co-founder Canon Rawnsley. Rescued from a serious fire in 2011, the Allan Bank first opened to visitors in 2012 and is presented largely unfurnished and undecorated. This year they are celebrating the 150th anniversary of Beatrix Potter’s birth by exploring the inspiration she took from her enduring friendship with Canon Rawnsley. Come along to hear some of her best loved stories - they are hoping to read 24 books in one day! More...

Hawkshead,  LA22 0LF - Saturday 10th September from 10am to 4:30pm - Beatrix Potter wrote and illustrated many of her famous children's stories at Hill Top. You can walk in the garden where Tom Kitten and his sisters played, find Jemima Puddle-Duck's egg in the rhubarb patch, and keep a look out for the rat holes once lived in by Samuel and Anna-Maria Whiskers in this free heritage open day. Keswick MuseumKeswick Museum & Art Gallery - Station Road, Keswick, CA12 4NF - Sunday 11th September from 11am to 4pm - This free event is called Opening the Costume Cupboard - drop in and explore the museum's costume collection with museum staff and volunteers. Children must be accompanied. No booking required. Keswick Museum cares for and shares about 20,000 objects which reflect life in the Keswick area. More...

Merz BarnKurt Schwitter's Merz Barn - Cylinders, Elterwater, Ambleside, LA22 9JB - Thursday 10th, Friday 11th, Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th September from 10am to 5pm - The Elterwater Merz Barn is a small stone building that was originally used for storing gunpowder made in the Elterwater Gunpowder Works opposite (now the Langdale Hotel). During the late 1940s it served as the studio of emigre German artist Kurt Schwitters who created an amazing work of art there, which in 1965 was removed to the Hatton Art Gallery in Newcastle for safe-keeping. The Merz Barn is situated in the beautiful Cylinders estate, and is visited by artists, art lovers, and academics seeking to appreciate the inspiration for Schwitters' internationally famous work. There will be special guided tours and talks for visitors, who will also be able to explore the site at their leisure. Steam Yacht Gondola Behind the Scenes - Coniston Pier, Lake Road, Coniston, LA21 8AN - Saturday 10th September - 5pm to 6:30pm - This is a superb opportunity for visitors and locals alike to find out more about the story behind the rescue and rebuild of this unique steamboat. More...

Wray CastleWray Castle - Low Wray, Ambleside, LA22 0JA -  Sunday 11th September from 10am to 5pm - Family fun, whatever the weather at this Victorian mock Gothic castle. Take a guided tour, dress up as king or queen of the castle, or simply relax and soak up the view. Why not take a stroll through the beautiful grounds and arboretum over-looking Lake Windermere too?
