The Kendal Torchlight festival is one of the largest one-day events in the Lake District and Cumbria, which in 2017 attracted 35,000 people from all over the country and 1,500 participants. Since the carnival's inception, tens of thousands of spectators have lined the streets of Kendal to witness the colourful procession of bands, floats, carnival performers and dance troupes winding its way through Kendal.

The Torchlight Carnival promotes the best of Kendal and, over the last 48 years, has enabled the chosen charities to collect many tens of thousands of pounds towards their worthy causes. Each year Torchlight has a different theme with 2018's being 'famous books and authors'.
The 2018 Torchlight Carnival and Traditional Procession will be on September 14th. Kendal's streets will start closing to incoming traffic from around 6:30pm and outgoing traffic from 6:45pm, re-opening at approximately 10:30pm. The parade will begin at Kirkbie Kendal School at 7:30pm and the route takes in Lound Road, Aynam Road, Miller Bridge, New Road, Stramongate, Blackhall Road, Sandes Avenue, Stricklandgate, Highgate, Kirkland, Nether Bridge and Lound Road.
