Force Crag MineJoin a guided tour to explore the processing mill and other remains of Force Crag Mine at the head of the Coledale Valley. History, engineering, geology, geography, archaeology - Force Crag Mine has it all. In this open day run by the National Trust, you will discover the story of the last mineral mine to be worked in the Lake District.

You could almost believe the miners had just left for the day. In amongst the Lake District fells above Braithwaite, discover what was once a hive of industry. The mining of lead, zinc and barites took place at Force Crag for over 200 years and while production ceased in 1990, the complete processing plant still exists.  In the hour-long tour, you will be guided through the processing mill and surrounding remains to get a feel for the harsh lives of the miners working away on the side of the fell.

This event is not suitable for small children or children that need to be carried and all youngsters must be accompanied by an adult. Porta loos are available at the mine on tour days. You should make your own way to the site (at the head of the Coledale Valley Grid Ref 198 216) on foot or by bike, or take a lift with the National Trust transport. If you'd like a lift, you can be picked up from the Noble Knott forestry commission car park, located part way up Whinlatter Pass opposite the Bassenthwaite Lake viewing layby (grid ref 223 244). The transport leaves ten minutes past the hour starting at 10.10am, with the last pick up at 3.10pm. The site is just over two miles from the main road up a gradually rising dirt track. Sturdy footwear and warm and waterproof clothing may well be necessary. Once on site the tour takes place partly outside on rough ground and involves a walk up hill but it does not take you underground. Dogs on leads are welcome, but are not permitted on the tour of the mill building. Also bring along any refreshments you might require.

All Tickets £5 (National Trust members) or £6 (Non members)
