The beauty of the Lake District and Cumbria is matched only by the abundance and quality of its cafés. A rich assortment lie waiting to be discovered, particularly in the hot spots of Bowness, Windermere, Ambleside and Keswick.

Bowness is the most popular place in the Lake District for tourists and has a lively mix of coffee shops. Quirky internet café The Elephant and Camel on Lake Road offers free Wi-Fi access and vegetarian fare with a Middle Eastern and Asian flavour. Monties café  and B&B on Crag Brow serves all day refreshments including a selection of wines. Local attractions in Bowness have their own serviceable cafés, such as the Blackwell Arts and Crafts House, or The World of Beatrix Potter.

Windermere town is very close to Bowness, but has a slightly more traditional ambience. Here, visitors can see the Brockhole Lake District National Park Visitor Centre, which includes café and gardens. Francine's Coffee House on Main Road is a bistro specialising in seafood, while Lazy Daisy's Lakeland Kitchen on Crescent Road is well known for its generous desserts. At the back of Windermere Railway Station is Booths supermarket, which has its own modern café in what was formerly a Victorian railway station.

Ambleside sits at the head of Lake Windermere, surrounded by parks, woods and gardens. There are many independent eateries such as Chester`s Café on Skelwith Bridge and The Apple Pie Eating House and Bakery on Rydal Road. Zefferelli's on Compston Road boasts a cinema and pizzeria. Grandy Nook café, with its low roof and wooden beams, is located in Ambleside's Hawkshead village. Nearby Buttercups Café is even tinier and so easily missed; it has its own sign at The Square.

Keswick lies some way to the North West of Ambleside and has a range of eclectic coffee shops. Near to Keswick's market square is the modern Café Bar 26 with wireless broadband and B&B. The Lakeland Pedlar Café and Bicycle Centre is a vegetarian wholefood café and bike shop in the town centre. Good Taste Café on Lake Road also runs a range of cookery days. Keswick's Square Orange on St John's Street has a full bar, food and live music.

Cumbria's charming cafés are a source of pleasure for locals and holidaymakers in equal measure. They provide relaxing surroundings, good food and the freshest coffee from bean to cup.
