About Kirkby LonsdaleThere are many riverside and country walks in the Kirkby Lonsdale district and Devil's Bridge over the River Lune is one of the particular features of interest. It’s over 600 years old and local legend has it that the Devil appeared to an old woman with the promise of building the bridge in exchange for the first soul that would cross over it. When the bridge was finished, the woman threw bread over the bridge and her dog ran after it and so outwitted the Devil! The remarkable Devils Bridge in Kirkby Lonsdale It’s also well worth visiting St.Mary's Church in Kirkby Lonsdale (pictured right) which boasts fine carved columns and dates back to 11th century Norman times. The view of the River Lune from St.Mary's churchyard is known as Ruskin's View as John Ruskin was a great fan and it‘s been painted by Turner. Ruskin so loved it that he wrote: "I do not know in all my own country, still less in France or Italy, a place more naturally divine” A two-day Victorian Fair is hosted most years (although not in 2010) in unspoilt Kirkby Lonsdale. The streets are closed to traffic and instead filled with traders' stalls, craft demonstrations and entertainment. Visitors to the annual fair are encouraged to wear Victorian dress.
