Coach Tours of the Lake DistrictPopular Tours Around the Lake District The Lake District, sometimes referred to as simply "The Lakes" is a region in Cumbria, in northwest England and is renowned for its natural beauty and its association with William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Robert Southey, otherwise known as the "Lake Poets". William Wordsworth was supposedly inspired to write his poem, "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud", by the sight of daffodils on the shores of Glencoyne Bay, Ullswater in 1802. The Lake District National Park in the largest in the UK and is home to the tallest mountain in England, Scafell Pike and the longest lake in England, Windermere. Renowned for its natural attraction it may be, but there are numerous towns and villages scattered throughout the Lake District. The town of Ambleside, for example, is situated right in the heart of the Lake District, just half a mile from the northern end of Windermere. The town achieved prosperity following the arrival of the railway in the middle of the 19th century and its Victorian heritage is very much in evidence. Bowness, on the eastern shore of Windermere, offers a wide variety of shops, restaurants and cafes and is home to "The World of Beatrix Potter" attraction, the only one of its kind in Europe. Further to the west, at the head of Coniston Water, the village of Coniston is a popular starting point for hikers and climbers. "The Old Man of Coniston", the highest point in the Furness Fells at a height of over 2,600 feet, overlooks the village. Less than 20 miles north of Coniston, Keswick, on Derwent Water, is a small, market town, but nevertheless offers a range of national and local specialist retailers and other amenities that you might expect in a larger town. As far as getting to the Lake District is concerned, the region is connected to London and Glasgow by the West Coast main line, with local stations at Kendal, Staveley and Windmere; the M6 motorway runs to the east of the Lake District Park and there is a local bus service, with extra services laid on during the summer months. There are also half day, full day or longer tours of the Lake District available by private hire coach. These typically take in all the major attractions in the area, including Hill Top, the home of Beatrix Potter and Dove Cottage, the home of 19th century poet William Wordsworth and many others. Some of these allow you to pre-book admission to attractions at a discounted price. |
