Farming and Agriculture in the Lake District and Cumbria
Farming has been the major industry in the Lake District
throughout history, with sheep farming being the most common; not
surprising given the mountainous landscape of the majority of
Cumbria. Sheep are able to cope with the rugged terrain and harsh
climate of the high hills. The lower regions allow for beef, dairy as
well as sheep farming. Over the last century forestry has become an
important part of the agricultural landscape with extensive planting
of conifer plantations which can be seen across the whole of the Lake
District and Cumbria
