The Lake District has various adventure centres and climbing clubs, which offer climbing packages to suit all levels of abilities and experience. If you are confident that you are qualified to climb without supervision, ensure that you have the correct equipment, food, drink and maps and that you have informed someone of the route you are taking. It is advisable to check the Lake District weather forecast before starting any of the routes and never climb alone! The Lake District is thought to be the birthplace of Rock Climbing with Pillar and Napes Needle being two of the earliest recorded climbs in the Lake District National Park. The first ever rock climbing group in the Lake District, the Fell & Rock Climbing Club, were formed in 1907 and held their first ever meeting at the Sun Inn, Coniston. The club now has well over a thousand members, owns huts and cottages in the Lake District and Scotland and produces widely-used rock climbing guides such as Lake District Rock At times of inclement weather, there are several indoor climbing walls to choose from at Ambleside, Kendal, Penrith, Keswick, Barrow-in-Furness, Carlisle and Cockermouth.
