Stainton Texels of Storth End Farm, Stainton near Kendal are breeders of award-winning Texel sheep. The hardy Texel breed is a popular lean meat sheep which is renowed for its exceptional versatility and carcass qualities.
Its exceptional lamb growth rate has proved a modern breed solution for many sheep producers, who are adapting to meet the challenges of producing sheep meat in a difficult UK environment. The Texel's versatility has also been recognised by upland and hill farmers who use the breed to their advantage in producing a more marketable product.
The breed originates from the island of Texel, off the north-west of Holland. In 1970 Texels were introduced to the United Kingdom and they have since developed into a large, prolific and well-muscled sheep, the most dominant terminal sire breed within the UK. The Texels have shown that they are capable of withstanding the rigours of the Scottish winter without hardship and their progeny have proved to be just as adaptable in our climate and altitude as flocks in Holland and France.
